What is happening to me/us

We are a group of three activists facing disproportionate fines for our climate activism. We find ourselves in a particularly vulnerable position because we have been implicated in the “Spora Case” investigation, which has accused us of “membership of a criminal organisation” for having taken part in non-violent protests in the past under the banner of Futuro Vegetal. This collective will not cover the fines we face for actions we have carried out under its name, so we are forced to raise the money ourselves.

In the case brought by the Ministry of Justice, the trial took place on 22 April 2025, two years after the protest. Until then, we have been caught up in a very long and gruelling process, which has left us with no energy to continue our activism. During the trial, we were convicted as perpetrators of an offence against the Historical Heritage and sentenced to a fine of €3,454.38 to be split between the two of us.

Meanwhile, on 3 June, one of us is facing a trial on charges of criminal damage using destructive means; they are seeking up to €2,900 from them for a protest in 2022 where they glued themselves to the frame of La Maja Vestida at the Prado Museum, to protest against the livestock industry and its link to the rising temperatures causing the climate crisis.

What happened

Sam was one of two people who glued themselves to the frame of Goya’s Las Majas at the Prado Museum on 5 November 2022, in a high-profile non-violent protest that did not damage any works of art. The aim was to highlight that we have exceeded the 1.5°C safety limit for the rise in the planet’s average temperature, and that there will be no art on a dead planet. For this, he is facing a fine of up to €2,900. Because of this action, she spent almost three days in a holding cell and has been involved in legal proceedings for over three years, which could result in fines she cannot afford to pay, meaning she could ultimately even end up in prison.

On 13 April 2023, Aina and Nahia carried out a joint action at the Ministry of Justice in Madrid to denounce the repression faced by environmental activists and how the justice system attempts to silence non-violent protest in a supposed rule of law. They were fined €3,454.39 for marking the ministry’s façade with water-soluble paint.

What do I/we intend

We need your help to stand up to the crackdown. Not only are we being dragged through lengthy legal proceedings, having police infiltrate our ranks and being treated like criminals, but we are also left in a precarious situation due to disproportionate fines. All this simply because of our civil disobedience and peaceful protest against the climate and eco-social crisis that threatens our lives and those of all beings on the planet, and against which the institutions are failing to act.

Who

Spora Case Acquittal is a group of more than 15 climate and eco-social justice activists who are facing disproportionate repression from the Spanish state. In their fight for the right to life of all people, including future generations, and of all other living beings, they have carried out protests against the criminal actions of governments and large corporations in the face of the eco-social crisis. They have acted in this way because non-violent civil disobedience has historically proven to be fundamental in bringing about unprecedented social change.

Although they have carried out actions with various environmental groups,  they do not represent any of them. What they have in common is that, in December 2023, they were implicated in the Spora Case, a police operation in which they are accused of belonging to a criminal organisation for having participated in protests in the past under the banner of Futuro Vegetal. This collective, despite the fact that its activists are currently facing numerous legal proceedings, will not pay any fines.

This has been their experience, sadly shared with many comrades in the struggle who are facing harsh legal proceedings with prison sentences and disproportionate fines in Spain for actions by Scientific Rebellion, Rebellion or Extinction and other groups in the environmentalist sphere; but also in other spheres, such as the six anti-fascists from Zaragoza, the six CNT trade unionists from Switzerland, the three SAT trade unionists, etc., also express their solidarity with all comrades who have been punished under the ‘gag law’ for protesting and who are being persecuted under the infamous immigration law. They stand in particular solidarity with the movement for the liberation of the Palestinian people, which is being harshly repressed in an attempt to silence a genocide sponsored by Europe and the United States. They see it as their duty as activists, as a predominantly white and privileged group, to reflect on their role in the struggle, when comrades from countries exploited by the West have so much more at stake every time they protest.
