€1,700 FINE FOR PROTESTING AGAINST COLONIALISM - SANCTION DE 1700 € POUR UNE MANIFESTATION CONTRE LE COLONIALISME

The administration of the Granada City Council imposes a penalty of 1700 euros on us (a fine of 850 euros each) for considering a serious infraction carrying out a symbolic act framed within the campaign "October 12: nothing to celebrate" that did not cause damage of any kind.

L'administration de la mairie de Grenade nous a imposé une amende de 1700 euros (une amende de 850 euros chacune) après avoir considéré un acte symbolique - qui n'a causé aucun type des dommages - comme une infraction grave.

On October 11, 2021 we carried out an act of nonviolent civil disobedience at the Statue of Isabella the Catholic and Cristopher Columbus in Granada. The performance sought to denounce the process of colonization of the American continent and the systematic extermination of lives and cultures in Abya Yala. The action consisted of sticking posters with adhesive tape with the slogans of the international campaign together with a Wiphala flag, as well as making a washable graffiti that represented blood stained hands as well as the slogan: 'The veins of Latin America are still open'. That day, at the end of the action, we were identified by the police.

Several months later, in June 2022, the Granada City Council sanctioned each of us with a fine of €850, for "serious infraction". Despite not causing any damage, the municipality of Granada imposed a sanction on us with a clear dissuasive intention, since the purpose of the fines is not to repair the non-existent damage. There is a clear desire to demobilize, control and criminalize the exercise of the right to peaceful protest, following the line marked for years in the Spanish State with the gag laws among others.

Que s'est-il passé ?

Le 11 octobre 2021, nous avons réalisé un acte de désobéissance civile non violente devant la statue d'Isabelle la Catholique et de Christophe Colomb à Grenade. La performance cherchait à dénoncer le processus de colonisation du continent américain et l'extermination systématique des vies et des cultures en Abya Yala. L'action consistait à coller des affiches avec du ruban adhésif avec les slogans de la campagne internationale, ainsi qu'un drapeau Wiphala. Nous avons aussi réalisé un graffiti lavable à l'eau représentant des mains tachées de sang et le slogan : "Les veines de l'Amérique latine restent ouvertes"'. Ce jour-là, à la fin de l'action, nous avons été identifiés par la police.

Quelques mois plus tard, en juin 2022, la mairie de Grenade nous a infligé une amende de 850 € chacune pour "infraction grave". L'action n'ayant causé aucun dommage, la municipalité de Grenade nous impose une sanction avec un objectif clairement dissuasif, car le but des amendes n'est pas de réparer des dommages inexistants, mais bien de freiner, contrôler et criminaliser l'exercice du droit de manifester pacifiquement, suivant la ligne tracée depuis des années dans l'État espagnol avec la "ley Mordaza", entre autres.

We seek to be able to reach 1,700 euros through personal contributions that allow us to pay each of the two fines of 850 euros that we received in order to continue acting. We deeply believe that in order to build a fair society, we must start from a solidary and collective concept in which we all share responsibility for caring for and supporting each other at all times. We understand that each person must exercise and defend their rights, but also, one must always act in defense of the rights and freedoms of others.

We will also present an appeal against these unjust sanctions that were brought against us. In the case of winning the procedure, the money returned would remain in the Burla Negra resistance box in order to face future sanctions.

Ce que je veux/nous voulons

Nous cherchons à pouvoir rassembler les 1 700 euros grâce à des apports personnels qui nous permettront de faire face aux deux amendes de 850 euros que nous avons reçues afin de continuer à agir. Nous croyons fondamentalement que pour construire une société juste, nous devons partir d'une conception solidaire et collective dans laquelle nous partageons tous la responsabilité de prendre soin des autres et de nous soutenir à tout moment. Nous comprenons que chaque personne doit exercer et défendre ses droits, mais doit aussi toujours agir pour la défense des droits et libertés d'autrui.

Nous déposerons également un recours contre ces sanctions injustes qui nous sont imposées. En cas de victoire de la procédure, l'argent restitué serait plaçé dans le fond de résistance Burla Negra pour faire face à de futures sanctions.
